The punishment was carried out on the orders of a local panchayat.

A woman in Bihar was tied to a tree and thrashed by villagers, including her own family members, as punishment for eloping with a boy from a  different caste. The incident took place in in Nawada district's Rajauli village on Friday.

According to reports, the punishment was carried out on the orders of a local panchayat. Her father, who was against the affair, supported the punishment.

"She was tied because she is a criminal. She wants to go with a man from another caste," he said.

The woman had run away with her boyfriend on September 30 and the couple was living together in a nearby village. She was caught by the villagers and brought to her village. The village panchayat then decided to punish her for eloping with a man of a different caste.

She was tied to a tree for several hours while people took turn to thrash her.

In a viral video, the girl can be seen tied to a tree and being flogged mercilessly by villagers. The girl also fainted multiple times as the men kept beating her.

While the woman said she ran away with her boyfriend, a resident of Balia, on her own free will, her father said she cannot marry outside her caste. He justified the punishment saying it was fit fot the 'crime' committed by his daughter.

“We want her to get married to someone from our own caste and not outside of it," he said.
